I was raised in a rough neighborhood, with all the things you can imagine. However, I was always able to stay hopeful about the future because of my parents’ values. They raised me to believe that you can do anything if you believe in yourself and that you will succeed. When I turned 18, my mom gave me $50 for my birthday and told me that I could go out and buy anything I wanted, but she also said “do not come back until you buy your first home.” Even though this money wasn’t much at the time, it was something special to me because it meant she believed in me enough to give up her money for me.

The day I went out and bought my first house was one of the happiest days of my life. It showed me just how far I had come. Today, every time I see someone who is homeless or has trouble finding an apartment, it reminds me of my mom’s words to me years ago.
